GARDENDALE —
Family Security Credit Union has been in business 57 years. There are 17 locations and 160 employees statewide. The Gardendale location, at 1001 Odum Rd., employs five people. Rita Boyd is branch manager of the Gardendale site.
• What services/products do you provide?
We are a full service credit union. Our products range from savings accounts, free personal checking, certificates of deposit, loans, business services and much more.
• What’s been your greatest success as a business?
We are new to the Gardendale market, but we plan on giving the community a strong and secure financial institution that they can trust. Family Security’s greatest success has been our ability to grow from a modest one-branch credit union into a strong financial institution with over 400 million in assets and 17 locations across the state.
• Is your line of work something you would recommend to someone else?
Absolutely, credit unions are very different from other financial institutions. We offer most of the products and services that banks offer, but we are member owned and non-profit. That means that our profits go back to our members instead of stock holders.
• What are you doing to combat the current economic climate?
During the downturn in the economy, Family Security has remained stronger than ever. We opened three new branch locations and continued to experience loan and deposit growth.
• Why should someone use your services over a competitor?
Our core values are based upon excellent service and we feel this is our greatest attribute. We will give each and every person that steps into our office the courtesy they deserve as well as give them excellent products that will help them reach their financial goals.
• What’s the best way to contact you?
Our operating hours are Monday through Thursday,
9 a.m. until 5 p.m.; Friday until 6 p.m.; and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our local number is 631-1031, extension 4700. Our website is www.myfscu.com

Leadership: Do you have what it takes?
Just like any call to leadership, the work is never finished. I am not certain who said this, but I like it: “A leader is best when people barely know he exists; when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, we did it ourselves.”
