Your City, Your Vote 2012: Niblett, Tumlin defeated; Hubbert re-elected

The votes are in, and the mayor of Trafford and a sitting council member in Gardendale have been defeated in their bids for re-election, after Tuesday’s municipal runoff elections.

Trafford Mayor Robert Niblett was soundly beaten by challenger Clint Daniels, who received 115 votes compared to the incumbent’s 65 votes. The total votes cast exceeded the number cast in the general election for mayor held in August.

In Gardendale, District 1 council member Peggy Tumlin was defeated by challenger Allen Jerkins, who was selected by 315 voters compared to Tumlin’s 259.

Jerkins’ win means that Gardendale will have four new council members out of five for the next term. Blake Guinn defeated incumbent Gary Morris, Greg Colvert upset incumbent Faith Harper, and Stan Hogeland won an open seat. Only Alvin Currington retained his seat.

In Fultondale, a pair of council seats were decided, with one incumbent being re-elected and one former council member returning to a seat from which he had been removed.

Darrell Hubbert won re-election to his Place 3 seat by defeating challenger Jimmy Lay 588-524.

In Place 5, Greg Morris will return to the council after defeating Thomas “Tip” Blizzard 560-540. Morris was removed by the council earlier this year after missing meetings for more than 90 consecutive days, as prescribed by state law.

Hubbert and Morris will join Josh Bryant, who was re-elected in August, along with as unopposed incumbents Tommy Loden and Joe Bolton.
