Gardendale council passes sales tax increase

The Gardendale City Council has passed an increase in the city's sales tax.

The action, which passed on a 4-2 vote despite objections by Mayor Othell Phillips (one of the teo "no" votes), will increase the city's sales tax from three percent to four, which means the overall sales tax on purchases within the city will go up to ten percent when state and county taxes are added.

The council did delay the effective date of the increase to January 1, 2011, in order to avoid the Christmas shopping season.

This is a breaking story. We'll have full coverage in Wednesday's edition of The North Jefferson News, on our Facebook page and here at njeffersonnews.com.
