— Fultondale assistant coach Richie Busby confirms various TV reports that Wildcat quarterback/free safety ArDarius Stewart has verbally committed to Alabama at their Junior Day today.
Stewart, who finished fourth in Mr. Football voting this year as a junior, was being pursued heavily by the Tide, Auburn, Mississippi State, Clemson and Utah. Stewart had been visited at his school by Tide coach Nick Saban a little over a week ago, Bulldog coach Dan Mullen, and Clemson assistants who flew into town on Friday.
Saban wants Stewart to play on defense, but possibly on kick returns as well. Auburn was known to want him for offense, likely as a slotback.
Verbal commitments by a junior are not binding, of course, but Stewart had been leaning toward Bama ever since Saban's visit.
We'll have more on this in Wednesday's North Jefferson News.
